Last week was a tough one for everyone in the big state of Texas. I am checking in and seeing how you are doing after a rough time when the winter storm came in. I would rather not ask in front of the whole class since you or your classmates may have a hard time talking about their situation. So, instead, I'm asking in a warmup question. I'd like to truly know how you are and your family is. How are you? It's okay to be honest. I'm not looking for complete sentences or correct punctuation. No points will be taken off. Just checking in on my students.

"February 9th is National Pizza Day! Whether you prefer it the Italian way with a thin crust, deep dish, or Chicago-style, no one can resist a slice of cheesy pizza, so it's no wonder this is one of America's most popular food holidays. With all the different possibilities there are for toppings, pizza is a food that anyone can enjoy. It is foolproof party food, it brings people together, and it is also the perfect comfort food to enjoy on the sofa. Impossible to resist! And on this day, everyone has the perfect excuse to enjoy their favorite pizza." (Source: https://www.calendarr.com/united-states/national-pizza-day/)

This day in History
Read about an important event that took place on this day and tell me your thoughts about it.
At 11:38 a.m. EST (10:38 AM our time), on January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Christa McAuliffe is on her way to becoming the first ordinary U.S. civilian to travel into space. McAuliffe, a 37-year-old high school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, won a competition that earned her a place among the seven-member crew of the Challenger. She underwent months of shuttle training but then, beginning January 23, was forced to wait six long days as the Challenger‘s launch countdown was repeatedly delayed because of weather and technical problems. Finally, on January 28, the shuttle lifted off.
Seventy-three seconds later, hundreds on the ground, including Christa’s family, stared in disbelief as the shuttle broke up in a forking plume of smoke and fire. Millions more watched the wrenching tragedy unfold on live television. There were no survivors.

Along with being Squirrel Appreciation Day, today is also National Hugging Day. Yes, it's a copyrighted holiday, even though it's not a "national" holiday, which takes a presidential proclamation and an act of congress.

COVID-19 changed many of our normal activities, hugging being one of them since it increases the risk due to not being socially distanced. Before the pandemic started, did you consider yourself a hugger? Did you freely give and receive hugs or did you choose not to give/receive hugs?

Before you illustrate your spooky story, I would like you to take a look at the events that you and your classmates included in the spooky story. Place them in the plot diagram where you feel they fit. I suggest finding the climax (most exciting event) and plotting that event first. Then, any main event that happens before that would be considered rising action. Any event after the climate would be placed as a falling action. The last event that happens where the problem is solved would be the resolution. The exposition happens at the beginning and introduces the character and the setting. The climax is the point in which the character has reached a point in which he/she knows the events are now a "problem" that must be solved. The falling action is all the events that the character does that collectively starts solving the problem.
This plot diagram is just a visual of the story that you have. We will start revising your story and either adding to the plot, taking things away, or changing the pieces to the story to your liking. Don't worry if the plot diagram is a bit scattered and has holes. You'll get a chance to revise and fill in tomorrow.
Send me an email and I'll send you the link to your original story with the parts your classmates added to it.

This is the website that you will use to illustrate your spooky story and turn your story into a digital book. Today, I would like you to open the website, login as a student using Google, and then type in my code to get to my "bookshelf" SYBCTXK. Play around and make a book. Use the on-screen buttons and tutorials to help guide you through your exploration and "play" time. This will just allow you time to play around and figure some things out before next week.
In your response to this question, just let me know what you think of BookCreator once you've had a chance to explore and experiment with making a digital book.

I have shared with you the "copy" of the story you will work on today and tomorrow. (You will find the new document under Google Drive and click Shared with Me) Your job is to read the story written so far. Then, decide how you want to finish the story before it goes back to the owner. Take a look at the WHOLE story and see how it makes sense to end this spooky tale. Continue to use strong adjectives to SHOW, and not tell the reader. This section should leave the reader knowing the problem was solved and understanding how the story ends. DO NOT write "The End" because that is only in fairy tales. You are writing a spooky story. Make sure you add at least half of a page to the story for the ending.
When you are finished writing the ending, you will copy the document's link (Share button, Under Get Link, click "Copy Link") and then paste the link as your "response" to this question in Google Classroom.
Skylar is working on Roger's story
Nevaeh is working on Skylar's story

Today is Ask a Stupid Question Day. It's your opportunity to speak up, and to ask all those questions you were afraid to ask. All those questions that you thought were too stupid or dumb to ask, have been piling up all year long. Today is the day to unload them. C'mon give it a try. Nobody will laugh......we hope.
Just this weekend, I made chicken spaghetti, but when I got ready to serve it to the family, I forgot to include the chicken. We had a big laugh and it was something I could fix (I cooked the chicken in my iron skillet and then mixed it in to the already-cooked juice and noodles), but I don't think my family will let me forget my ""stupid"" moment I had.
Have you ever had a ""stupid"" moment? If so, tell me about it. If not, maybe someone around you had a ""stupid"" moment that you remember.
